So I caught a small part of the 20/20 special last night. Turns out that Ted Turner feels that 2 Billion is not enough money to have and that he should not feel compelled to be charitable with what God has given him.
Now I don't condone forcing rich people to donate to charities because that is just too close to a government based tax, but from the perspective of working in the mental health field.... it just seems like it would be nice to have even 1% of Ted Turner's money. Mental health suffers from a severe lack of funding due to insurance company premiums being so high and a lack of charitable giving. I work at a center were the per client amount of money that is allocated is only $8. That means that each month we have exactly $8 to spend on the client for all services. Our case managers make $8/hour, which means that if they see a particular client more than once in a month (which they should to ensure the client continues to improve), they have officially gone over their allocation for that client. This also does not include any cost for the client to see the doctor, nurse or to receive any form of medication.
I have an idea... to provide more funding for the mental health field... let's lower the salaries of Congress and the Senate. The bleeding heart liberals are always talking about wanting to tax the rich and give the funds to the lower and middle class... well how about John Kerry and Ted Kennedy take a salary cut and donate the money to the people that "really need it".
